Cartoon

A full-scale drawing or painting used in the transfer of a design to an easel painting, fresco, tapestry, stainless glass, or other work, usually of large size. The term derives from cartone, the Italian word for heavy paper on which cartoons were made. They were usually executed with chalk or charcoal and sometimes fully covered in watercolor, gouache, tempera, or oil.
